Pam + Greater Raleigh CVB

So… I have more details to share on a project that should give my magical music journey a bit of oomph!
I was recently contacted by the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau about being featured in their new Visitors Guide.
One of the sections is called Music Maniac.
They want to use me and my music as an intro the music scene in the area. I’m feelin’ pretty special right about now.
Those who know me know that I am certainly on fire and crazy about singing, so I think I fit their bill.
The folks writing the Music Maniac section sent me some interview questions.
I’d like to share what they had on their minds, and how I answered back.
Shoot, I just feel so honored that they even considered me for this part of the Visitors Guide.
I’ll let you know when this all comes to life. Onward + Upward!!
*How did you get into music?
From as far back as I can remember, I have always loved music. I have always loved singing. As a child the songs of Motown figured prominently in my home. There was also a plethora of Gospel music. Both my parents are terrific singers and they both filled our home with music. I was painfully shy however during my formative years and did not sing publicly. Those who heard mere snippets of my singing voice praised it as gift. I was just too afraid to do anything with it. It was not until my daughter went off to college that I began to explore my love for singing and a desire to share it with others. By then, after so many years of being a broadcast journalist, I was not shy at all, and was ready. I hired a voice coach and was on my way.
*Tell us about your debut CD, The Full Measure of a Woman.
I collected some of the songs I have come to love since launching myself into jazz singing around Raleigh. I picked songs of which I felt uber comfortable.
I realized that the lyrics of most all of these songs fit under an umbrella of a woman who knows what she wants, and who is not afraid to voice it. As a woman of a certain age, that is precisely where I stand in most areas of my own life.
The title was born of these things.
*Was it recorded in Raleigh? Tell us about the recording industry in Raleigh.
The album was recorded in Raleigh. Dick Hodgin at Osceloa Studios is the one who mixed and mastered the songs. I don’t know a great deal about the music industry in Raleigh. Therefore, I surround myself with a small circle of people I know and trust. One of my vocal coaches referred me to Mr. Hodgin. He worked at one time for a local fox program modeled after American Idol, called Gimme Me the Mike. He was a straight shooter who did not pull punches. They jokingly called him the “career assassin”.
I enjoy working with people who speak the truth even when it hurts.
*When you want to go out for a night of music in Raleigh, where do you go?
I love going out and listening to live music.. be it jazz or pop or blues, or classical. You can find it all in Raleigh. I love Oliver Twist, The Mint, Soutland Ballroom, Irregardless Cafe, and Lincoln Theater to name a few.
*We know you are very committed to the well-being of children. How does your music influence the young?
I believe when a song is soft and soothing, it can fit the label of a lovely lullaby. Songs such as Poetry Man, I’ll be Seeing You, and Get Here are examples of songs I have performed that could easily calm a child.
I would like to in the near future produce a collection of jazzy songs that would delight kids, or even a CD of soft lullaby’s.
*You’ve got an Emmy. Is a Grammy next? What can your fans look forward to next?
Fans can look for me next in a music project that salutes the military.
I believe freedom is a very precious, though fragile commodity. Whenever I read newspaper accounts about veterans who have been wounded or hear of servicemen or women who have died in action, I am reminded that someone paid a dear price for the way of life I enjoy. The least I can do is say, Thank You!
*In two or three sentences, what’s a visiting music maniac to love about Greater Raleigh?
There is a venue in Raleigh on any given night that supports live music. There is nothing quite like having the experience of watching live musicians on stage. It’s food for the head and the heart.
