It Happens.. to the best of us.
March 4, 2011 No CommentsI took this picture recently at Southland Ballroom in Raleigh. The Lee Boys are jamming. SB is an awesome venue for live musicians. They’ve got everything: great acoustics, lights, plenty of space, and a sound engineer who’s on his game– and that’s just begins to highlight what makes this place so impressive.
Back to the Lee Boys:
The Lee Boys are one of Florida’s finest Sacred Steel Artists. The Hottest movement on the music scene these days is the “Sacred Steel” sound that developed its roots in the House of God church. This church serves as the foundation from which these seasoned musicians developed and perfected their style, talents, and skills. There are six members who are brothers and nephews. Each member began making music in the church when they were 7 and 8 years old, and they have not stopped playing since.
So, this band drove up all the way from Florida on this particular night. They didn’t have the full band, but we would soon learn they had more than enough to please a crowd.
They walked in to crickets. What a shame!
I was there, sharing a table with another couple. That was it!
The musicians warmed up and went backstage to change their shirts and refresh themselves.
They re-emerged about 30 minutes later, and by then there were … oh I’d say 15 people in the place.
The Lee Boys played like there were 1500 people crammed in. Their energy is sky high, and the music demands that you move.
The songs I loved most included:
FEEL THE MUSIC
LET’S CELEBRATE
JOYFUL SOUNDS
When I perform, I entertain just like the Lee Boys.
I feel so much joy around singing, I never ever even feel like half-stepping when the crowd is thin. It’s a pleasure for me to touch a stage. Any stage.
I have been right there where this band was that night. I saw firsthand that a small audience can show up even for more established artists. That was something I needed to see. The Lee Boys showed how the big boys and girls do it.
The show must go on!
Onward + Upward!!
