Singing For Our Vets

No event in American History is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War.

–Richard Nixon

My memories of the Vietnam War have a permanent place in my soul.  They haunt me to this day.

Two things stand out:  The graphic television images that played in my home, and the visible impact of war I saw on the returning soldiers in my neighborhood.

These things left me a longing to help veterans on a personal level.   Until today, I have done nothing to make something happen.

I have contacted the Durham VA Medical Center.  I left a message with the volunteer services coordinator.  Simply put:  I want to entertain hospitalized veterans.  I’d like to give these courageous women and men hope and encouragement as they heal,  through my gift of song.

It is Wednesday.  I am hopeful that I’ll get a callback.   I am grateful for an opportunity to serve.
