Great news: I have been given the opportunity to help brand the Triangle, “The Creative Hub of the South.”
To say I am excited is an understatment. I hooped and hollered inside the Metro Cafe and Lounge after my meeting with the storySPARK organizers. I am now a part of their schedule of events for the third annual SPARKcon weekend showcase. It’s scheduled for September 19- 21.
As I’ve blogged before SPARKs range from artSPARK, youthSPARK, ideaSPARK, to yogaSPARK.
Back to the meeting– I burned two songs on to my i-Pod (Peel Me a Grape, and Black Coffee). I’m glad I did. The owner of Metro Cafe, Mauro, was there. He was able to hook my i-Pod into his sound system. He handed me a microphone, and I took it from there. My songs were exactly what the planners, Billy and Greg had in mind. It was funny, though this stylist club was closed, some folks off the streets in City Market began sticking their heads in to listen!
I am so pumped. While I was singing Billy and Greg were planning how the night would go. Our event is September 20th and around 10:00pm. They’re calling it StorySPARK After Dark. Artists will hang their work on the walls, Writers and Poets will share their work with the audience. I will be singing my songs between the readings.
The Metro Cafe and Lounge is a really neat night club in historic City Market. It’s the perfect venue for an intimate evening of entertainment.
This will be a fantastic event. I am sure of it!
As a performer, I have never done anything quite like this. I get to stretch and grow in a new direction, thankful for the chance to be a part of Raleigh’s creative surge.

I would love to bring my gift of song to the upcoming SPARKcon event in the Triangle. I’ve excitedly blogged about SPARKcon in the past, but this local talent showcase is now less than a month away.
I am meeting with one of the planners of the SPARKmusic event to talk about a unique collaboration idea.
It’s all about creativity and thinking outside the box to capture ideas about the creative future of the Triangle here in North Carolina. I’ve been jazzed about this concept from the start. To me, it’s what building a creative class is all about!
So, back to that meeting I have tomorrow afternoon. The venue is a small lounge in the center of downtown (City Market).. and the evening is built around story-telling. It’s mostly a SPARKcon for writers. However, the planner wants to add a new dimension to this group later in the evening… say around 9:30pm or so. Smoky Jazz. I am not entirely sure what that means song-wise, and that’s why we are going to talk it out… see what is possible. I like that.
Now, I have a few idea about some songs that “could” be described as “Smoky”. Diana Krall songs, like: Peel Me a Grape, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, and The Look of Love. The legendary Nina Simone, could also be described as smoky. I know a couple of her songs.
It’s going to be a good meeting, whether I fit the bill or not. You see, whether I flat out participate, or just show up I’ll be bringing something to the cause. Merely, showing up is having a say.
Just in case, there’s a need for a little audition, I’m going to bring my boom box and be prepared to sing one of those songs I’ve mentioned. I’ll just burn a few songs onto a disc. No problem.
Game on!
