For The Children
June 17, 2007 No CommentsI am learning that at any performing event, there are potential opportunities for future work. You never know. I am therefore committed to giving 150 percent no matter the venue or the size of the audience.
Last night, I put on a sexy red dress and red stillettos as I was cast to sing the role of MOTORMOUTH MAYBELLE. She’s the big mouth DJ in the tony-winning musical HAIRSPRAY who helps the kids dance and battle segregation.
The big deal in all of this: 42 of the Triangle’s most talented high school and college students who are involved in a program called “Performance Edge. These young people really know how to put on a show! They were directed by my vocal coach LISA BLAIR at the A.J. Fletcher Opera Theatre in downtown Raleigh. It was their summer showcase final performance, and it was nothing short of dazzling.
The show’s finale featured the catchy song: YOU CAN’T STOP THE BEAT. I heard a gasp from the audience and then applause when I strutted on the stage in the middle of the production. The auditorium was filled mostly with parents and friends of the students, and they had no idea I was in the show. They know me as that “lady from the news”, and so they really got a jolt and a new perspective of me. It was all good and just a really fantastic night of fun.
In the audience, a very nice man that I met before the show. A.J. who among other things books entertainment for clubs and events all over the southeast. Oh Joy!
It pays to approach each engagement as an audition. What will come of this? Stay tuned friends!
